How empty legs work in Australia
Australia’s charter geography produces a steady rhythm of repositioning flights. The east-coast triangle of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane generates the most, alongside pairs such as Brisbane–Gold Coast and Perth–Adelaide, where aircraft return empty from resort weekends and cross-country business runs. Because the aircraft must make the journey regardless, operators release these legs at 25 to 75 per cent below the standard charter rate — the sharpest last-minute value in Australian private aviation.
The trade is flexibility. An empty leg follows the itinerary of the client who chartered the outbound sector: the route is fixed and the departure window largely set, and if that booking shifts, the leg shifts with it. On the busiest corridors, well-priced legs are often taken within hours of listing. The travellers who see the best of this market are those who can decide quickly — or who let the legs come to them, by registering for alerts above.
Good to know
Frequently asked
What is an empty leg flight?
An empty leg is a private jet flight that must reposition without passengers, typically returning after a one-way charter or moving to collect its next client. Rather than fly the sector empty, the operator releases it at a significant discount — the same aircraft, crew and service, at a price a standard charter cannot match.
How much do empty leg flights cost in Australia?
Meaningfully less than a standard charter of the same aircraft and route — typically 25 to 75 per cent below, with the deepest reductions on short-notice departures. Each leg is priced individually against the repositioning it rides on, so there is no tariff; every fare is confirmed as a firm, all-in figure before you commit.
How reliable are empty leg flights — can the schedule change?
An empty leg exists because of another client's confirmed charter, so if that booking moves or cancels, the leg can change or disappear — occasionally at short notice. This is uncommon but genuine, and it is the reason for the discount. If a leg falls through, we will offer alternatives, including re-quoting the route as a standard charter.
Can I change the route or timing of an empty leg?
Within limits, yes. The aircraft must still reach its destination, so the route is essentially fixed, but departure times can sometimes shift by an hour or two, and some operators will accept a nearby departure or arrival airport. Small adjustments are often possible — ask when you enquire — though the deepest discounts favour travellers who take the leg as published.
How do empty leg alerts work?
Register your preferred routes and dates and we notify you the moment a matching empty leg is released. Because well-priced legs on Australia's busiest corridors can be taken within hours of listing, an alert is the most reliable way to secure one. Registration is complimentary, takes a minute, and carries no obligation to book.
